School starts back four weeks from today!

Do you have someone in your family who will be entering first grade?  Pirate's Guide to First Grade might be just the book you need to help them make that transition.

It's the first day of first grade, and it's all hands on deck for a young pirate and his crew. How much trouble can they get into? What will they do at recess? And, most important, what treasure awaits them at school?

Jack Parker signing copies of Parker's Guide to the Revolutionary War in South Carolina - this afternoon from 4:00 until 5:30 pm

On Friday, July 16, 2010
Burry Bookstore is hosting an Author Meet and Greet
from 4:00 until 5:30 pm
Jack Parker will be signing copies of
Parker's Guide to the Revolutionary War in South Carolina

This event is FREE and open to the public

Parker's Guide is an impressive undertaking, locating 430 documented sites, from major battlefields protected as National Parks to little-known skirmishes, ambush and partisan murder sites. Parker has done the boots-on-the-ground research to put you at the places of these engagements. While there are several other guides to Revolutionary War sites in South Carolina which locate major battles in a general vicinity by showing you where the historical markers are, which is often miles from the actual battlefields, Parker's Guide also covers sites which are lesser known, unmarked and not interpreted. There never will be a complete list of all of South Carolina's Revolutionary War skirmishes and murders as the participants rarely wrote down their depredations and the dead tell no tales. Parker's exhaustive research and tying the events to geography will inspire all to recognize, visit and understand the depth of the struggle in South Carolina for our Independence. With this guide, we come to better know the land of our Liberty.

Jack Parker was born in Pennsylvania, raised in Delaware, and lived in Virginia, California, Colorado, and South Carolina. He earned a Bachelors Degree in Education and served 4 years in the US Navy as an Asst. Navigator aboard the USS Spiegel Grove, then as a Navigator and Executive Officer aboard the USS Pitkin County. After leaving the Navy, he moved to Colorado, and rode and packed horses into the Gunnison Wilderness Area. He then spent 5 years living aboard a 43' yawl home ported in Charleston, South Carolina, and taught several people to sail and live on the water. He lived at times near historic McClellanville and Eutawville, South Carolina. There he became interested in visiting Revolutionary War sites and discovered that directions were non-existent. Thus, the idea of Parker's Guide was born. Three and a half years of legwork in the field have brought this practical guide to you.

London is the setting for Alexander McCall Smith's latest novel

A delightful new setting--London--a wonderful new cast of characters and one incredibly clever dog.

Corduroy Mansions is the affectionate nickname given to a genteel, crumbling mansion block in London's vibrant Pimlico neighborhood and the home turf of a captivating collection of quirky and altogether McCall-Smithian characters. There's the middle-aged wine merchant William, who's trying to convince his reluctant twenty-four-year-old son, Eddie, to leave the nest; and Marcia, the boutique caterer who has her sights set on William. There's also the (justifiably) much-loathed Member of Parliament Oedipus Snark; his mother, Berthea, who's writing his biography and hating every minute of it; and his long-suffering girlfriend, Barbara, a literary agent who would like to be his wife (but, then, she'd like to be almost anyone's wife). There's the vitamin evangelist, the psychoanalyst, the art student with a puzzling boyfriend and Freddie de la Hay, the Pimlico terrier who insists on wearing a seat belt and is almost certainly the only avowed vegetarian canine in London.

Filled with the ins and outs of neighborliness in all its unexpected variations, Corduroy Mansions showcases the life, laughter and humanity that have become the hallmarks of Alexander McCall Smith's work.

Don't you just love Patricia Polacco?

Thank you Mr. Falker is one of my all-time favorite books for children.  I've read it a million times, but still always cry at the end.  Now Patricia Polacco has a new book with yet another inspirational message - Junkyard Wonders.  If you've not read any of Polacco you need to get started today!

When young Trisha finds out her class at the new school is known as "The Junkyard," she is devastated. She moved from her old town so she wouldn't be in a special class anymore! But then she meets her teacher, the quirky and invincible Mrs. Peterson, and her classmates, an oddly brilliant group of students each with his or her own unique talent. And it is here in "The Junkyard" that Trisha learns the true meaning of genius, and that this group of misfits are, in fact, wonders, all of them. Based on a real-life event in Patricia Polacco's childhood, this ode to teachers will inspire all readers to find their inner genius.

Patricia Polacco comes from a family of storytellers, poets, dirt farmers, teachers and artists. They came from many parts of the world, but mainly Russia. She grew up to be an illustrator, a designer, and a writer of children's books. She now lives in Oakland, California with her husband and two children.

Miracles, Angels and Life Beyond This World

In 2004, Kevin Malarkey and his six-year-old son, Alex, suffered an horrific car accident. The impact from the crash paralyzed Alex-and medically speaking, it was unlikely that he could survive.

"I think Alex has gone to be with Jesus," a friend told the stricken dad.

But two months later, Alex awoke from a coma with an incredible story to share - events at the accident scene and in the hospital while he was unconscious - the angels that took him through the gates of heaven itself - the unearthly music that sounded just "terrible" to a six-year-old - and, most amazing of all . . . of meeting and talking to Jesus.

"The Boy Who Came Back from Heaven" is the true story of an ordinary boy's most extraordinary journey. As you see heaven and earth through Alex's eyes, you'll come away with new insights on miracles, life beyond this world, and the power of a father's love.

Jerry B. Jenkins - The Last Operative

Jordan Kirkwood wants to go quietly into the sunset. His career as an NSA intelligence officer has taken a significant toll. His two adult children are little more than distant acquaintances. His wife has been patient and supportive, but he knows she has deserved better. That was part of the reason they were going to London. He wanted her to see Europe like a tourist. But that was before he was given intelligence information during the recent mission to Germany. The threat is grave-bigger than 9/11. And the risk is compounded by the fact that someone inside the NSA is involved. The most hidden place in Kirkwood's past will have to be unmasked in order to meet the challenges of this mission.

Dr. Jerry B. Jenkins, former vice president for publishing and currently writer-at-large for the Moody Bible Institute of Chicago, is the author of more than 150 fiction and nonfiction books, including the New York Times bestsellers SOON and The Rising, the latter belonging to his Left Behind series with Tim LaHaye. He is the owner of Jenkins Entertainment, an award-winning filmmaking company, and of the worldwide Christian Writers Guild, aiming to train tomorrow's professional Christian writers. He and his wife, Dianna, have three grown sons and three grandchildren.
