How are Those Swimming Lessons Going?

Do you have a reluctant swimmer in your household?  I know I did!

Maybe Splat the Cat can encourage your little swimmer to take the plunge!

You might need a copy of Splish Splash Splat!
by Rob Scotton.

Splat does not want to have a playdate with Spike. And he does not want to learn how to swim--water is horrible, scary, and wet! He's sure that this is going to be the worst day ever. But when the rest of their classmates rush straight into the pool, Splat and Spike find that they may have more in common than they thought.

Burry's Makes Hartsville Feel Like Home - Oh We Love To Hear That!

We enjoy hearing comments from our customers about why they like to shop at Burry's.  Here is what Tonya Rainey recently told us:
"I have enjoyed shopping at Burry Book Store since we moved here, from Atlanta, in 2000.  To find such a delightful book shop in the heart of downtown only adds to the charm of Hartsville.  The store staff are always welcoming, friendly and helpful.  Most often the book I am looking for is right on the shelf.  If not, the order process is always simple and quick. The opportunities provided by the author's luncheons and childrens' readings further enrich our community.  For me,  Burry's is part of what makes Hartsville feel like home."

Why do people shop at Burry's?

Mary Ward Baucom is one of our volunteers leading our Tuesday Talk Club for Kids this summer.  She recently told us why she likes to shop at Burry's:

"Shopping at Burry Bookstore is a family tradition for the Baucom Bunch which began when we moved to Hartsville nearly 30 years ago.  We have always been welcomed and greeted by name, even when the children were small, and have been treated as valued customers. My parents, who live in a much larger city, especially love to go to Burry's because they no longer have a local bookstore which offers such personal service.  Not only do we find great reading material there, but a wide variety of other gifts and services. Thanks for the friendly service, up-to-date products, and now the wonderful "Meet the Authors" opportunities!  Ya'll are GREAT!!!"

Tell us why you shop here!  We'd love to hear your story.

Jim Harrison Prints and Note Cards

Have you seen our new selection of prints and note cards from the Jim Harrison Gallery?

Jim Harrison loves the South and rural America with a passion. With paintbrush and pen, he does his best to preserve that part of rural America that seems to be slipping away far too quickly. Jim's realistic paintings of landscapes with fields of cotton and old barns, old country stores with Coca-Cola signs, and country roads lined with trees - along with paintings of seascapes, lakes, and rivers - bring back special memories to all that view them. Jim's success is evidenced by more than 35 years as a full-time artist. After viewing his art, you will find yourself begin to slow down and actually take the time to notice our great land. His paintings stir feelings and memories in everyone - from the very young to the very old.

Dorothea Benton Frank's Folly Beach

Out next Tuesday - Folly Beach - by Dorothea Benton Frank

Experience the wild beauty and magic of "New York Times" bestselling author Dorothea Benton Frank's Carolina Lowcountry--where the pull of family is as powerful as the ocean tides and love can strike faster than lightning in summer. . . ."Folly Beach

Home is the place that knows us best. . . .

A woman returns to the past to find her future in this enchanting new tale of loss, acceptance, family, and love.

With its sandy beaches and bohemian charms, surfers and suits alike consider Folly Beach to be one of South Carolina's most historic and romantic spots. It is also the land of Cate Cooper's childhood, the place where all the ghosts of her past roam freely. Cate never thought she'd wind up in this tiny cottage named the Porgy House on this breathtakingly lovely strip of coast. But circumstances have changed, thanks to her newly dead husband whose financial--and emotional--bull and mendacity have left Cate homeless, broke, and unmoored.
Yet Folly Beach holds more than just memories. Once upon a time another woman found unexpected bliss and comfort within its welcoming arms. An artist, writer, and colleague of the revered George Gershwin, Dorothy Heyward enjoyed the greatest moments of her life at Folly with her beloved husband, DuBose. And though the Heywards are long gone, their passion and spirit lingers in every mango sunset and gentle ocean breeze.

And for Cate, Folly, too, holds the promise of unexpected fulfillment when she is forced to look at her life and the zany characters that are her family anew. To her surprise, she will discover that you can go home again. Folly Beach doesn't just hold the girl she once was . . . it also holds the promise of the woman she's always wanted--and is finally ready--to become.

"Folly Beach," filled with the irresistible charm, saucy wit, and lush atmosphere that have won her the devotion of fans and propelled her books to bestsellerdom, is vintage Dorothea Benton Frank.

Great First Day of Kids Tuesday Talk Clubs

Yesterday was a terrific day at the bookstore as we launched our Tuesday Talk Club programs for children!

From 10 until 10:30 am we had story time for rising 3K through 5K children.  We talked about LOUD NOISES and soft sounds .
We read the book Too Much Noise by Ann McGovern and we made some pretty LOUD and soft sounds ourselves!
Next week Karen Walters will be leading this group as they read Hugless Douglass next week.  Make sure you don't miss this fun time for the little ones!

You can see from the picture what we did with rising 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders from 11:00 until around 12 noon and then with rising 4th and 5th graders from  noon until around 12:45.  Joanne Merck led the younger students as they read about Dolphins, magic, coral reefs and more in Magic Tree House: Dolphins and Daybreak.  The older group began reading Vet Volunteers:  Fight For Life and had a good time sharing stories about pets and learning about vets!

We will be having these groups from now until the end of July, so make sure you bring your kids during the weeks you are in town.  We have a real treat for you with the greatest slate of volunteers.  We give a big thanks to Karen Walters, Laura Tyner, Joanne Merck, Mary Ward Baucom, Becca Benson, and Jada Gore for working with these students this summer!

For more information about the Tuesday Talk Club and the Summer Kids Club (you can earn a Burry Bookstore gift card by turning in your Burry reading log in August) please follow this link and click on the Summer Info navigation button or call 843-332-2511.

Do you have a Burry's story to tell?

We love hearing from our customers what it is that keeps them coming back to shop at Burry's.  Do you have a story to tell?  If so, please let us know.  We'd love to hear it!

Here's what Marty Brown had to say:
"We moved to Hartsville a few years ago, and we were quickly drawn in by the beautiful and vibrant downtown area.  How rare, in these days of huge corporations and big box stores, to find a walkable downtown area with shops that have been in operation for several generations.  Burry Bookstore is one of our family favorites, and we have committed to doing all our book and gift shopping there in an effort to keep what we have.  Emily and all the women who work there always greet us and help lead us to what we need, or they let us browse for as long as we want.  Even my extended family makes a stop in Burry Bookstore when they are visiting the grandkids, because the large city where they live has no such treasure!
I especially love the variety of quality books and toys for children.  We're always proud to give gifts from Burry, because we know they are toys and books of lasting value.  My children can play in the children's area while I browse the shelves, and have done so for long stretches.   For myself, I enjoy the cookbook and gardening sections, where I can find helpful books that are regionally specific.  I always make a stop at the stationery section, as well.  If I know of a book that isn't on the shelves, I've used the online shopping, or requested that the bookstore order something, and I enjoy picking it up right in the store."
