Why do you choose Burry's?

Author, educator, friend, and loyal customer Sara Odom has this to say about her shopping experiences at Burry's:

"Hartsville is fortunate to have its very own bookstore, owned, operated and managed by a native of Hartsville!  Sometimes we don't realize just how fortunate we are to have someone who is vested in Hartsville in a huge way.  Across the United States, bookstores are rapidly finding themselves in bankruptcy, as the Internet has taken much of the local business.
Burry Bookstore continues to provide wonderful opportunities for our citizens, opportunities that we certainly don't want to lose.   From hosting bestselling authors (and encouraging new authors like me) and providing special events like Mrs. Kit and Ashley the Magician to providing clubs and other organizations support in their every endeavor,   Emily and her staff at Burry's are one of Hartsville's treasures."

New Debbie Macomber out today!

A Turn in the Road - Debbie Macomber

In the middle of the year, in the middle of her life, Bethanne Hamlin takes a road trip with her daughter, Annie, and her former mother-in-law, Ruth.
They're driving to Florida for Ruth's 50th high-school reunion. A longtime widow, Ruth would like to reconnect with Royce, the love of her teenage life. She's heard he's alone, too...and, well, she's curious. Maybe even hopeful.

Bethanne herself needs time to redirect, to ponder a decision she has to make. Her ex-husband, Grant--her children's father--wants to reconcile now that his second marriage has failed. Bethanne's considering it....

Meanwhile, Annie's out to prove to her onetime boyfriend that she can live a "brilliant" life without him!

So there they are, three women driving across America. They have their maps and their directions--but even the best-planned journey can take you to a turn in the road. Or lead you to an unexpected encounter--like the day Bethanne meets a man named Max who really "is" a hero on a Harley. That's when Bethanne's decision becomes a lot harder. Because Grant wants her back, but now there's Max....

From Seattle's Blossom Street to the other end of the country, this is a trip that could change three women's lives.

Enjoy the best from home grown gardens, fresh markets, and roadside stands

The New Southern Garden Cookbook

Well-known food writer Sheri Castle aims to make "what's in season" the answer to "what's for dinner?" This timely cookbook, with dishes for omnivores and vegetarians alike, celebrates and promotes the delicious, healthful homemade meals centered on the diverse array of seasonal fruits and vegetables grown in the South, and in most of the rest of the nation as well.

Increased attention to the health benefits and environmental advantages of eating locally, Castle notes, is inspiring Americans to partake of the garden by raising their own kitchen plots, visiting area farmers' markets and pick-your-own farms, and signing up for CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) boxes from local growers.

"The New Southern Garden Cookbook" offers over 300 brightly flavored recipes that will inspire beginning and experienced cooks, southern or otherwise, to take advantage of seasonal delights. Castle has organized the cookbook alphabetically by type of vegetable or fruit, building on the premise that when cooking with fresh produce, the ingredient, not the recipe, is the wiser starting point. While some dishes are inspired by traditional southern recipes, many reveal the goodness of gardens in new, contemporary ways. Peppered with tips, hints, and great stories, these pages make for good food and a good read.

Check Out Our Window Displays

It's interesting to hear the different things customers notice and enjoy about the bookstore.

Here is what Shari Carter has to say:
"I love Burry Bookstore and enjoy treating myself to books and items from their stock. I also find Burry Bookstore to be most accommodating for my shopping needs. I can call to check on any title or author and if not in stock it is there within a day or two. Additionally, I feel that it is one of the best places in Hartsville to buy a gift for people of all ages. The personnel are very friendly and helpful. Burry has been very supportive of local talent and I always enjoy their inviting window displays. It is always a delightful place to visit and shop!"

A Breath of Fresh Air

It means a lot to know that customers appreciate and enjoy shopping at Burry's.  Do you have a time you especially remember or a favorite story to tell about Burry's?

Email us and tell us about it!

Here's what Carol Bryant has to say about shopping at Burry's:
"Entering Burry Book Store is like a breath of fresh air.  You are always greeted by a friendly and smiling sales lady who ALWAYS asks "how are you" and calls you by name. The ladies in Burry's truly care about each person that enters their store and will help them in any way they can.  If they don't have what someone needs, they will suggest another store in Hartsville that they should try.  To me, this is going the extra mile for their customers.   Whether it is an all occasion card, a book, a gift  or personalized note cards, Emily and Lynn and All the Girls always make it a fun experience.  If I am not sure, I will ask their advice and they will give me their ideas and most of the time, they point things out that I had not even thought about.  They All are Great and my trips to Burry's are very frequent  and for whatever reason if I don't go in Burry's for several days, the next time I do go, Lynn will say, where have you been-"we have missed you"-Now how many places can you go anywhere and have that kind of personal attention?

I just know in my heart that Mr. Charlie Burry (whom I loved dearly) is still smiling down on all of us because Emily is continuing "The Burry Tradition" in the same way he did for many years.  The City of Hartsville is so lucky to have Burry Book Store.  It truly is a wonderful asset to the City and I am proud that I have been able to shop there for many years.

On Saturday, April 16, 2011 approximately 400 volunteers with the Hartsville Christmas in April program will be repairing more than 35 owner-occupied houses in the Hartsville area.
