What is one to do? Fiance is Gone and Future Mother-In-Law is a Notorious Criminal!

What do you do when your fiance disappears and you find out your future mother-in-law is a notorious criminal?

Find out in Jude Deveraux's new novel Scarlet Nights.

Engaged to the charming and seductive Greg Anders, Sara Shaw is happily anticipating her wedding in Edilean, Virginia. The date has been set, the flowers ordered, even her heirloom dress is ready. But just three weeks before the wedding, Greg gets a telephone call during the night and leaves without explanation. Two days later, a man climbs up through a trapdoor in the floor of Sara's apartment, claiming that he is the brother of her best friend and that he's moving in. While Mike Newland is indeed telling the truth about his identity, his reason for being there reaches far deeper. He's an undercover detective, and his assignment is to use Sara to track down a woman who is one of the most notorious criminals in the United States--and also happens to be the mother of the man Sara plans to marry.

Mike thinks the job will be easy--if he can figure out how to make a "good" girl like Sara trust him, that is. But Mike has no idea what this mission has in store for him. He's worked hard to keep private his connections to Edilean, which date back to his grandmother's time there in 1941. But as Mike and Sara get to know each other, he can't help but share secrets about himself that he's told no one else. And in return, Sara opens up to Mike about things she could never reveal to Greg. As the pair work together to solve two mysteries, their growing love begins to heal each of them in ways they never could have imagined.

New Harry Turtledove Novel

In 1938, two men held history in their hands. One was Adolf Hitler. The other was British prime minister Neville Chamberlain, who, determined to avoid war at any cost, came to be known as "the great appeaser." But Harry Turtledove, the unrivaled master of alternate history, has launched a gripping saga that springboards from a different fateful act: What if Chamberlain had stood up to Hitler? What would the Nazis' next move have been? And how would the war--which Hitler had always regretted waiting eleven months to start--have unfolded and changed our world?

Here, Turtledove takes us across a panorama of conflict fueled by ideology and demagoguery. Nations are pitted against nations, alliances are forged between old enemies, ordinary men and women are hurled into extraordinary life-and-death situations. In Japanese-controlled Singapore, an American marine falls in love with a Russian dance hall hostess, while around him are heard the first explosions of Chinese guerilla resistance. On the frontlines of war-ravaged rural France, a weary soldier perfects the art of using an enormous anti-tank gun as a sniper's tool--while from Germany a killer is sent to hunt him down. And in the icy North Atlantic, a U-boat bearing an experimental device wreaks havoc on British shipping, setting the stage for a Nazi ground invasion of Denmark.

From an American woman trapped in Germany who receives safe passage from Hitler himself to a Jewish family steeped in German culture and facing the hatred rising around them, from Japanese soldiers on the remote edge of Siberia to American volunteers in Spain, West and East is the story of a world held hostage by tyrants--Stalin, Hitler, Sanjuro--each holding on to power through lies and terror even in the face of treacherous plots from within.
As armies clash, and as the brave, foolish, and true believers choose sides, new weapons are added to already deadly arsenals and new strategies are plotted to break a growing stalemate. But one question looms over the conflict from West to East: What will it take to bring America into this war?

On Friday, July 23, 2010
Burry Bookstore is hosting an Author Meet and Greet
from 4:00 until 5:30 pm
Hartsville Native Dan Easterling
will be signing copies of his new novel
The Paralegal

This event is FREE and open to the public

Paula Cooper, a paralegal from Georgetown, SC, gets in way over her head while working for a crooked attorney, J. Thomas Denby, who has a way of winning most all of his cases. She is asked by her boss to participate in a plot to blackmail a federal judge for a huge bonus. Reluctantly Paula, the single mother of two teenage daughters, attends Judge Parks' annual Christmas party in Charleston, SC where she is to entice him to his bedroom for an embrace. A private investigator hidden outside waits to capture a photo, but before she can complete her mission things go terribly wrong.

The love of her boyfriend, Jim Roberts, an antique dealer she had met at the Isle of Palms the previous summer, is tested because of what Paula has done. She is confronted with the possibility of losing this special man, and faces charges with jail time. Jim has challenges of his own learning of Paula's secret life.

The FBI investigative team of John Dibbs and Albert Mendez are assigned to the case discovering that there are many possible suspects in a double murder and blackmail plot. The twists and turns are many as they attempt to capture the assailant in a shootout within the picturesque city of Charleston.

Daniel describes his novel in the three paragraphs above, but says that it's more than a suspense novel. According to Daniel, it has a little bit of everything, from the history of Charleston and St. Michael's Episcopal Church, to a providential love, which is evident throughout the book as his main character, Paula Cooper, seeks redemption from a bad decision. A statement about the pollution of our environment is also evident as a sub-theme.

Daniel Stephen Easterling, known in Hartsville as Danny while growing up, was born at Byerly Hospital on October 28, 1951. He attended school locally in Hartsville and played basketball, lettering six years for Hartsville Jr. High and Senior High. He is the youngest of four siblings and raised by a widow, Erma M. Easterling, whose late husband, H. C. Easterling worked at Sonoco Products Company as a precision millwright until he passed away of cancer in March of 1955 when Daniel was three and a half. Mrs. Easterling also passed away four years ago.

Upon high school graduation in May of 1969, Daniel attended the University of South Carolina from 1969-1972. For personal reasons Daniel withdrew as a junior to travel and live in different parts of the United States, i.e. Missouri, California, and Texas. Daniel also did missions work at an orphanage in Central America. He attended the University of Texas at Tyler in 1978-1979 while managing a restaurant, and then transferred to Howard Payne University, a private college in Brownwood, Texas. He graduated with honors in 1983 with a Bachelor of Arts where he majored in Psychology with a minor in Political Science. He was twice named to Who's Who of America. Daniel returned to South Carolina in 1983 to live and work in Hartsville in the eighties. In 1991 Daniel moved to Columbia where he currently lives and works in sales. Daniel is divorced and has two grown children. His hobbies are travel, exercise, guitar, harmonica, and tennis. Daniel's second novel is due to be released in late 2010.
