Love on Valentine's Day and for the Rest of the Year

How many different kinds of love can you think of this Valentine's day?

Love for your spouse/ significant other...

In this memoir meets relationship advice book, 94-year-old Cutie Cooper chronicles the challenges and triumphs of her seven decade-long marriage and then pulls out sage tips and actionable advice on the art of fighting fair, knowing if you've met 'the one,' raising children while maintaining your sense of self, and everything else that goes into staying blissfully bonded.

Marriages may be made in heaven, but they must be nurtured here on earth. In Five Love Languages  Dr. Chapman explains how people communicate love in different ways, and shares the wonderful things that happen when men and women learn to speak each other's language.

The Love Dare is a  40-day challenge for husbands and wives to understand and practice unconditional love. Whether your marriage is hanging by a thread or healthy and strong, "The Love Dare" is a journey you need to take. It's time to learn the keys to finding true intimacy and developing a dynamic marriage. Take the dare!

God's love for you...

Dr. Jeremiah reveals that not fully understanding and appreciating every critical dimension of God's love can lead to missed opportunities to experience His love. He explains how even the so-called negative dimension of God's actions can only be rightly understood by viewing them in light of God's true love.

Love for your family...

More than 8 million people tune in each night to hear the soothing voice of Delilah, America's favorite nighttime radio host, and each week, dedicated listeners send her letters with their own stories of the heartache, healing and happiness that their families bring them. This unforgettable book compiles the best of those letters and pairs them with stirring songs to recreate the magic of Delilah's radio show. She also shares stories of her own family, and the laughs, worries and love her twelve children--nine of them adopted--have brought into her life. There are chapters for sisters and brothers, husbands and wives, sons and daughters, adoptive families, blended families, extended families and even the people who feel like family.

Love for your children...

"Guess how much I love you," says Little Nutbrown Hare. Little Nutbrown Hare shows his daddy how much he loves him: as wide as he can reach and as far as he can hop. But Big Nutbrown Hare, who can reach farther and hop higher, loves him back just as much. Well then Little Nutbrown Hare loves him right up to the moon, but that's just halfway to Big Nutbrown Hare's love for him.

Love is the greatest gift we have to give our children. It's the one thing they can carry with them each and every day. If love could take shape it might look something like these heartfelt words and images from the inimitable Nancy Tillman. Here is a book to share with your loved ones, no matter how near or far, young or old, they are.

"I'll love you forever I'll like you for always As long as I'm living My baby you'll be."

What Goes Wrong Can Make You Better

From "Chocolate Naked Ladies" to "Talking to the Dead," Joe Baroody's perspective on life and living is as refreshing as it is original. Dr. Baroody is a pastoral counselor and an ordained Baptist minister, and has served as chaplain, minister, and counselor at hospitals and medical centers in South Carolina. He has been in private counseling practice since 2001 and has published numerous articles, essays and poem in regional and national publications.

Chronicles of an Irreverent Reverend is a collection of short stories ranging from his childhood to his parenting years rushing his kids off to school to grandparenting and dancing with his 3 year old granddaughter. Dr. Baroody has a knack for finding "teachable moments" such as "it is a mistake to hold hands with a screaming woman in labor, especially if you are wearing a ring" and "silence trumps stupid questions."

The Irreverent Reverent will be in the store signing copies of his first book Chronicles of an Irreverent Reverent on Friday January 25th from 4:00 to 5:30.

Are you a fan of Downton Abbey?

Have you been following Mary and Matthew with their rollercoaster relationship? Did you root for Sybil as she ran away with the chauffeur, wanting more than her sheltered life on the estate? Are you in mourning with Edith after she was jilted at the alter?

Maybe you've been following the servants. When will Daisy realize that she really did love William? What's going to happen with Mr. Bates? Will Anna find out the truth and get him released from prison? When will Thomas and Mrs. O'Brien get in that cat fight we've all been waiting for?

Our wait for the third season was finally over on January 6 but here are some books to help you get through the week as you wait for the new episodes to air on Sunday night.

Lady Almina and the Real Downton Abbey: The Lost Legacy of Highclere Castle was written by Lady Fiona Carnarvon, the 8th Countess of Carnarvon. It tells the story behind Highclere Castle which is used as the setting and inspiration behind Downton Abbey. It follows the 5th Countess, Lady Almina, who like Lady Cora Crowley, was an American heiress whose dowry served to save the estate.

Daisy Goodwin's The American Heiress is the story of Newport heiress Cora Cash whose mother wants the one thing that money can't buy for her in the states-- a title. Follow their journey to England to find who Mrs. Cash thinks is a suitable husband for her daughter. Cora soon finds out that the old- world aristocracy is not all it's cracked up to be.

Fay Weldon, one of the writers of the pilot for the original "Upstairs Downstairs," has written the first novel in a trilogy following the Earl of Dilberne, his family and servants, as he searches for a suitable wife for his son, or more accurately a suitable dowry to save their already morgaged estate.

What Do You Like Best About Your E-Reader?

The Kobo Mini - $79.99

The Kobo Glo - $129.99

These are the two e-readers we are selling.  I have the Kobo Glo.  It's going to take some time for me to get used to not holding a book!

The two things I have found that I like best about e-reading is the light on the Glo that allows me to read in the car when it's dark, as well as after I've gone to bed and turned out the lights.  That way I'm not disturbing anyone else!  I also like being able to swipe a page quickly while using the elliptical to exercise rather than having to hold a book up and turn the pages!

I am excited that we are able to offer to our customers who do like e-reading the option to do that while supporting Burry Bookstore.  We've not been able to compete with the "big guys" up to this point, so we are asking you to register with our e-book partner, Kobo books, through the affiliate link on our website and start supporting us!  For Burry Bookstore to receive credit for your purchases, you must register with Kobo through the link on our website.  After you do that, all of your purchases will be associated with Burry Bookstore, so you will be keeping your shopping dollars in downtown Hartsville, South Carolina!

If you already have an e-reading device, that's okay too!  Kobo offers free apps that can be downloaded on your IPad, IPhone, Android Phone, and other tablets.  Get started today!

Postscript to Yesterday's Blog

I corresponded with Elizabeth Collins of Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, South Carolina, yesterday and she sent me this great book trailer for Mary Whyte's new book Down Bohicket Road .

The friendship she mentions in the trailer is one she developed with Alfreda Gibbs Smiley LaBoard, a Gullah woman she met when she and her husband moved to the barrier islands of the low country.

You'll be touched by the tribute she has made to the Gullah way of life through her new book Down Bohicket Road .

Here is a link to the book trailer .

New Book by Artist Mary Whyte

Imagine my surprise awhile ago when I answered the phone and Mary Whyte was calling!  If you don't know who Mary is, you may remember the children's book P is for Palmetto that came out about 10 years ago.  Mary is the illustrator of that book.

Watercolor artist Mary Whyte is a teacher and author who has achieved national recognition.  Her portraits are included in numerous corporate, private, and university collections, as well as in the permanent collections of South Carolina's Greenville County Museum of Art and the Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston.  Her work can be found at Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, South Carolina.  Here is a link to her website http://marywhyte.com/ .

Down Bohicket Road has just been released and includes two decades' worth of watercolors - depicting a select group of Gullah women of Johns Island, South Carolina, and their stories.

When Mary called she and I tried to coordinate our calendars, hoping to come up with a date that would work well for both of us to have her come to Burry Bookstore.  Unfortunately, with the busyness of the holidays, we weren't able to do that, but we do hope to schedule something this Spring.  I have not met Mary in person, but have read enough about her to know that she would be a delight to meet.  I'm hoping that this Spring I will have the opportunity to do just that!

Down Bohicket Road:  An Artist's Journey by Mary Whyte with excerpts from Alfreda's World comes in both paperback and hardcover.  We have the hardcover edition and it is $49.95.
